Indian stock costs: brokerage, DP charges and settlement

Follow a share transaction from the order ticket to the ledger and withdrawable balance.

Distinguish the accounts and product

The trading interface routes orders; the demat account records securities holdings. Delivery, intraday, derivatives and margin-funded positions have different cost and obligation patterns. A zero-brokerage headline for one segment does not make every service free. Check the tariff for the actual account plan and order type, including assisted orders and any margin-funded facility.

Build a cost worksheet

List brokerage, applicable exchange and statutory charges, taxes, DP debits, financing and any payment-gateway charge separately. A percentage and a flat amount per executed order are not interchangeable. Some charges use different bases or apply only to one side, so one blended turnover percentage is only a rough scenario. Use the provider calculator and final contract note for an exact transaction.

Worked example: a per-order cap

Assume a hypothetical intraday tariff of 0.03% capped at ₹20 per executed order. A ₹50,000 buy costs ₹15 brokerage; a ₹51,000 sell costs ₹15.30. The round-trip brokerage is ₹30.30, before other charges. A ₹1,00,000 order would reach the ₹20 cap. Splitting a trade into several separately executed orders may change brokerage; use the tariff’s definition of an order.

DP and maintenance are separate costs

Selling demat holdings can attract a DP debit under the broker/depository schedule. Its charging unit may be per security per day rather than a percentage of trade value. Account maintenance is an ownership cost and can depend on account category and eligibility. Do not add GST twice when the quoted charge already includes tax. Check whether a promotional waiver has an expiry date.

Trading balance versus withdrawable cash

A sale credit displayed in an app does not automatically mean the same amount is immediately withdrawable. Settlement, pending obligations and the broker’s withdrawal cycle matter. NSE describes both T+1 and eligible T+0 settlement arrangements; the selected trade and service determine the applicable cycle. Weekends and settlement holidays are not ordinary settlement days. Consult the live exchange calendar and account ledger.

Exercise: reconcile a round trip

Write down purchase value, sale value, brokerage and every other charge. Gross price profit equals sale value minus purchase value; net trading result subtracts the transaction costs. Compare your estimate with the contract note and identify discrepancies. Do not use the simplified calculator as a tax return or assume delivery and derivatives share the same rate schedule.
