Prop firm rules: challenge cost, drawdown and payout eligibility

Read a programme as a contract with separate purchase, evaluation and reward stages.

Know what the fee buys

The headline account size is a programme parameter. It is not a personal bank balance paid to the trader. Determine whether the programme is simulated, whether any live allocation is possible, and what conditions apply at each stage. A challenge fee, activation charge, reset fee and recurring subscription are different expenses. A possible refund is conditional until earned and received.

Compare the loss allowance, not only account size

Two programmes labelled $100,000 can have different loss capacity. A static 10% overall allowance is $10,000 under a simple initial-balance model. A trailing threshold can move after gains, changing the remaining buffer. Daily and total limits apply separately. Check whether equity, floating loss, commission, swaps and time-zone resets enter the formula.

Worked example: a smaller buffer governs

Assume an illustrative initial balance of $100,000, a static overall floor of $90,000 and a daily floor of $95,000. At equity of $96,000, total buffer is $6,000 but daily buffer is only $1,000. A new position risking $1,500 could violate the daily rule before the total rule. Equality at a limit may itself be a breach under the contract; do not presume zero buffer is safe.

Understand consistency without chasing a payout

With a $1,000 best day and $4,000 eligible total profit, concentration is 25%. Under an illustrative at-most-20% rule, the denominator would need to reach $5,000 while the best day remains $1,000. That does not instruct a trader to force another $1,000 profit. Later losses or a new best day change the calculation; some programmes use different definitions or no such rule.

Calculate the reward after eligibility

At $5,000 eligible gross profit and an 80% trader share, gross reward is $4,000. Deduct applicable transfer costs to estimate net receipt. Minimum days, safety buffers, payout caps, identity checks and prohibited-strategy terms can still prevent eligibility. An advertised processing time is a provider promise, not an independent record of successful payments.

Purchase checklist and exercise

Save the programme name, price, account size, rule version and payout conditions before checkout. Compare two programmes using total purchase/retry costs and the same loss scenario. Confirm news, overnight, automation and copy-trading permissions from the exact plan. A coupon should be applied only after this comparison, not used as evidence that a programme is suitable.
